MHSR Scholarships

Each year MHSR awards scholarships to High School seniors. Students complete an application and undergo an interview process. Awards are announced at the annual High School finals. All 2024 MHSR seniors who are furthering their education are invited to apply. The 2024 application is due to the rodeo office before or at the last regular rodeo of the Spring season, May 11-12, 2024 in Palmyra. The application is a fillable PDF form.

MHSR Merit Scholarship

Each year the Missouri High School Rodeo Association awards Merit Scholarships to senior student members. Scholarships are allocated based upon total MHSR membership. The scholarships are provided to the states by the National High School Rodeo Foundation, with states determining the recipients through an application and interview process. This program is intended to reward those members who have supported the association over the years through their participation, passion and good all-around conduct.

Live Like Landon Memorial Scholarship

The Live Like Landon Memorial Scholarship is valued at $1,000 and was established in honor of Landon Smith, a former MHSR member and bull rider, whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident in January 2018. This scholarship was established by his family—parents, Steve and Kelly, and brother Cole—to honor his memory and to help a senior member of MHSR.

Landon is remembered for always going the extra mile to help anyone, but especially with the things he was passionate about—whether that was rodeo, hunting or fishing—and always with a smile. Landon would literally give the shirt off his back if someone needed it more.

The Live Like Landon Scholarship is given to an individual who always goes the extra mile: to be kind, to help anyone in need—someone who is a friend to all.

Johnny Laughlin Memorial Scholarship

The Johnny Laughlin Memorial Scholarship was established in 2020 to celebrate Johnny’s life. Johnny had an eye for livestock and provided cattle for rodeos, jackpots and benefits all over the state of Missouri and neighboring states. In 2005 Johnny and his family started and ran Show-Me Timed Event Challenge at the arena on their farm. Johnny was known for making people feel welcome, encouraging contestants and being fair to all. The Johnny Laughlin Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an MHSR contestant who cares for others, their livestock and carrying on the morals and traditions of the western way of life.

NHSRA Scholarships

The National High School Rodeo Foundation was created in 1970. It is the "scholarship arm" of the NHSRA, awarding thousands of dollars in educational funding each year to NHSRA members.
